Tangential to a recent post of [livejournal.com profile] ginmar, I started thinking about the various physical senses and "core" emotions. By "core" emotions, I mean the "pure" biological emotions which combine to form all emotional states, like the primary colors combine to form all the others. So. Here's my lists.

Emotions:
  • Joy
  • Sorrow
  • Fear
  • Anger
  • Disgust
  • Surprise
  • Desire

Physical Senses:
  • Vision: the sense of sight, detection of electromagnetic radiation
  • Audition: the sense of hearing, detection of transmited pressure waves
  • Olfaction: the sense of smell, detection of airborne chemicals
  • Gustation: the sense of taste, oral detection of solid or liquid chemicals
  • Tactition: the sense of touch, detection of applied pressure
  • Nociception: the sense of pain, detection of damage to the body
  • Thermoception: the sense of temperature
  • Equilibrioception: the sense of balance
  • Proprioception: the sense of body awareness, detection of the position and movement of body parts in relation to each other
  • Pruritus: the sense of itch, detection of irritants
  • In addition, hunger and thirst may or may not be considered independent senses, based on the scientist.
Interestingly, although most people only think of the first five when thinking of "senses", they will generally agree with the presence of the others once the senses are identified or described.

Your thoughts?

it seems as if the additional senses are subsets of what we would call the five senses. Since we are speaking of pain and itch in a purely physical rhelm, then are these not part of touch? Could we not have a sense of pleasure (do not some believe that our reactions to are enviroment is nothing more than reactions to a sliding scale of pleasure and pain)?

Can we really say that proprioception is a physical sense since it deals with perception of the environment that, granted is obtained by the raw data that is fed into our brain, is processed by our mental perception of reality?
