Jul. 28th, 2004 06:08 pmEmotions are strange phenomena. They serve no apparent purpose from a evolutionary/survival standpoint, but most mammals seem to display emotion. Fear, surprise, anger, joy, disgust, sorrow... these are the basic emotions with which all others are constucted and so many mammilian species display evidence of them. Cats purr when they're happy or content (forms of joy), a dog whines when it's afraid or sad, rabbits and deer freeze or dart away when they're surprised.
I just find it interesting how prevalent emotional responses are in mammals, which would imply that emotions have some positive benefit towards an individual and species-wide survival.
Have you ever caught yourself grinning for no particular reason? I've been catching myself several times over the past couple of days. I guess I get more benefits from unwinding and relaxing when I'm not nuerochemically depressed. Imagine that...
P.S. I'm both surprised and impressed that "contemplative" is one the moodlist.
