The family and I saw The Day After Tomorrow at the matinee today and OH. MY. GOD! It's so bad that it's hilarious!

For starters, here's a pretty funny & accurate recap of the movie. And it was so bad that all of us started doing MST3K-style commentary from about 15 minutes into the movie. We normally only do that at home, but the hilarious awfullness was just too strong.

Heading on to specifics: the CGI of the weather-caused disasters was actually pretty decent and resulted in some really nice shots. The non-CGI weather disasters was... not so much so.

North Texas sees a lot of tornados & hail, and the scenes of them was, shall we say, less than impressive. In the hail scenes, it goes from rain straight to fist- & grapefruit-sized hailstones. Plus they didn't even look like hail! They looked like someone had chipped jagged chunks off a block of pure, clear ice and then threw them from off-screen! And the LA tornado scenes... There were 4 F5-level tornados happening within half a mile of each other, and a helicopter was able to fly (somewhat) unimpeded between them. Riiiiiight. Plus, tornados are warm-weather phenomena, but these were (supposedly) happening during a snowstorm. However, seeing the airheaded newscaster get slapped by a flying billboard was nice.

And maybe it's because I enjoy reading slashfic, but I kept seeing so much UST between pretty much all of the main male characters. Then again, my mother, father and sister all saw it too. There's a scene where the sex-say Asian scientist is pumping the 2 companions of the paleoclimatologist dad for info on him that goes something like this:

Sex-say Asian scientist (SSAS): "Is he always this intense?"
2 Longtime companions (2LC): (in unison) "Yep"
SSAS: "Does he every let up?"
2LC: (in unison) "No/not really"
My immediate response was (as them)
SSAS: "So is he good in bed?"
2LC: (in unison) "OH, yeah!"

All in all, the "science" was horrible, but in a wonderfully, unintentionally entertaining way. I'll probably get it when it comes out on DVD, just so I can mock it to my heart's content.
