In the spirit of previously passed legislation, here are yet more disturbances in the legal ether.
The thing is, on one hand I can see their point. Working at my father's dental office, I've seen plenty of people who have all but lost their claim to being a human being. We've had to specifically request certain patients to take their business (and their problems) elsewhere. Of course, in our cases, the patients were being abusive to the doctor and staff, demanding unnecessary drugs or treatments, or refusing to pay their bills. But I can understand where they're coming from. Sorta. I just feel that they're wrong.
I do feel that these laws should not be passed, as they are codifying a statement that certain forms of discrimination are legal. I feel that not only is such a law reprehensible and fundamentally immoral, but unnecessary. As I've reported above, there are so many other valid reasons to want to "fire" or refuse treatment to patients, that I can't see any real reason to codify this specific reason other than as a statement in the laws against non-heterosexuality.
And the birth-control thing? Completely illegal, and the woman has grounds to sue the pharmacy for discrimination due to not properly training their staff. But, as someone pointed out elsewhere, the proposed laws mentioned above may also or really be targeting these kinds of women's rights.
I feel that we're in the middle of a new Civil Rights upheaval, and sometimes I wish the rioting would break out just so we can get it out of our collective systems.
