After talking with my sister's fiance (again, congrats [livejournal.com profile] lysariala!), and looking at various reviews online, I decided to join my very first MMORG: City of Heroes. I bought the pre-order today, and although I'm too late to join the beta-test, I'll be able to start 3 days before the regular opening, so it's all good. I've been thinking about a few hero concepts and how they could work within the framework established by the CoH system, and here's the character I think I'll start with. Feel free to skip it if you don't particularly care, but I would like feedback from any of y'all.

"Shalom"

Richard Golde grew up listening to his grandmother's stories. Often they were folk tales from her Russian homeland. Sometimes they were stories from the Talmud. And very, very rarely, they were stories of her stay in the concentration camp. Those were told only when he asked, and only when his parents weren't around to shush his grandmother. Richard grew up with these stories, and took them all to heart.

When he entered college, he chose to major in History, with emphasis of Judaism. The more he learned about the history of his people, the more he felt drawn to a specific story: the story of the golem.
~~~
"It is my purpose."
~~~
The most common story of the golem said that it had been made by the Rabbi Loew of the city of Prague in the 16th century to protect and serve the Jews living there. The golem was created from clay of the river according to a specific mystical ritual and was given life by the word of God placed in its mouth.

Remembering the horrors his grandmother and many, many others had lived through, not to mention the recent Rikti invasion, Richard felt that another golem was needed in today's world. So as part of his studies, he researched the method by which the golem was created in detail, and sought ways to make the golem stronger, tougher, and more likely to protect not only Jews, but all the threatened people of the world.

"It is my name."
~~~
In his efforts to create a better golem, Richard also began to study magic. His breakthrough came when he found a way to gather together shadows into a physical substance, much like mud or clay. Using his magic to gather the shadows, and the mystic ritual to form them into a body, Richard created a golem, and powered it, not only by the name of God, but also by its own function and name: peace.
~~~
"It is my self."
~~~
Richard was successful in his efforts, and the newly created shadow golem, Shalom, came to life and looked to Richard for guidance. The spells and rituals had greatly depleted Richard, and he took many months to recover. During that time, he discovered that not only did Shalom possess an independent intelligence, but that it could speak, although its voice sounded deep and hollow, as if from the bottom of a well. He taught the giant creature of darkness how to speak, as well as training it in how to control its own form, which appeared as that of a large-framed, genderless person, and seemed to grow, feel pain, and react as a human body would.
As Richard regained his strength, so did Shalom become stronger, soon becoming able to control the shadows around him. However, Richard began to detect signs of... restlessness in the golem, and came to a decision. He called Shalom to him, once again marvelling at how the giant, almost featureless form appeared silently from the shadows of which it was made, and told it that it was time. Shalom was to go among the people of the world, and bring peace to all that it could. Paragon City is its first destination.
"Shalom."
Not in any great detail. The version I'm using here was one I found online, but the version I heard when I was younger had the rabbi creating the golem to protect the Jewish ghetto from the "blood vigil" in Prague, and rather than having the name of God placed in its mouth, it had the word for "truth" inscribed on its forehead. To be destroyed, part of the word had to be erased in order to form the word for "death". I never heard anything about the specific ritual used, nor did I really research it, but I always found the story interesting.
