So that soured my evening.

The route I take home from work includes a back road that's in between some built up subdivisions and some open land, some of which is used as a Christmas tree farm. On the way down that road tonight, a rabbit ran across the road. I tried to brake to miss it, and would've if it'd kept running, but it stopped right in the path of my wheel. I felt it thunk as I ran over it.

This is the first time I've killed a vertebrate and I have a sick feeling in my stomach. This is... not a great way to end my work day.

It's okay, several years ago I was driving back from a funeral in Kermit, and a bird flew right into the windshield. I had to pull over, I couldn't see, and PawPaw had to clean the windshield and drive for a couple of hours. I was shaking too much. I'm really sorry. The vultures still lurk on the rooftop of our neighbor, but they mostly roost on the high power lines over close to the drying fields. We haven't seen any of our rabbits since the red eared hawk moved in and the owl started including us in its hunting area. On the other hand, Elizabeth has chickadees, more than 10 pair of cardinals lots of bunnies and at least 2 distinct species of squirrels, none of which pay the lease mine to Ursa. She also has deer grazing in her front yard, not 10 feet from her bedroom window. I bet that Christmas tree farm is more of a bunny ranch.

Hitting something with a car just seems like a much more violent way to kill something, accidentally or not. I just hope that I crushed its skull, so it died instantly instead of living however long in agony.
