A few months ago, one of my friends linked to a music video by this artist, Janelle Monae. I was (and still am) greatly impressed by the vision presented in her videos, especially considering that Ms. Monae apparently has a significant amount of control over what the videos look like and how well they conform to the concept of her albums

Cut for bandwidth )

ETA I had a lengthy post here with analysis of each video, but LJ ate everything after the "Many Moons" embedded video and I can't remember exactly what I wrote. Suffice it to say that I'm impressed by the many and subtle influences and references in the music and videos. Rather than try to recreate, I'll just present the videos for your edification. Please feel free to let me know what you think about them

One of the medical sources we request records from is called Triumph and every. Single. Time. I see their name, "Still Alive" from Portal starts playing in my head.

There is no use crying
over every mistake.
You just keep on trying
'til you run out of cake.
There are experiments to run;
there is research to be done
on the people who are
Still Alive.

So I've been in an odd mood lately and been going through the mounds of stuff on my computer that I haven't even looked at in who-knows-how-long. Something I found that I'd almost completely forgotten about was a fanmix album entitled "Tomorrowland" for Jericho, that shining piece of what-could-have-been.

...sigh...

Anyhoo, someone on the Television Without Pity board put together an album of music that evokes/ed the show and characters. It's shockingly good and I've found myself playing the entire 18 song "album" several times since then. It's MUCH more country than my normal tastes, but it's more old-school country than pop-country, which I think is more the style that I don't care much for.

'Tomorrowland' track list enclosed )

I'm glad I refound this. :-) If anyone asks, I'll post a yousendit link to individual songs or the whole album.

Well, it looks like I may be going to a street party in Chapel Hill tomorrow for Halloween. I hope it'll be fun. :)

In the meantime, here are some Halloween related things for y'all to enjoy!

Quick game for my peeps: below are lyrics from 5 random songs on my computer. First person to correctly identify each song by title and artist gets to post their own lyric challenge in the comments.

1) "I saw my baby, crying hard as babes could cry." - Magic Dance by David Bowie - [livejournal.com profile] reset_smith, who challenges:
  • "The image still hurts my eyes.
    White chlorine burns so bright.
    Sometimes I fear the night.
    When addiction became surprise."
2) "He woke up at nights.
He thought he was twice.
He was moving away
cause everyone thinks that it goes away with age."

3) "On a gathering storm comes a tall, handsome man in a dusty black coat..." - Red Right Hand by Nick Cave - [livejournal.com profile] igrantbear, who challenges:
  • "You catch the pearl and ride the dragons wings"
4) "I am aware it's just a movie. I'm aware that it's cliché."

5) "When the world keeps coming down on me, let it go!" - Jenny Says by Cowboy Mouth - [livejournal.com profile] hax0rcub, who challenges:
  • "You are what you are, you dream what you dream."
6) "You gotta take the elevator through the mezzanine" - Super Bon Bon by Soul Coughing - [livejournal.com profile] boysnightout82

Have fun!

I'm not quite sure why, but lately I've been listening to more computer game music. Not just the originals, either, but remixes too.

Specifically, I'm listening to music from the Fallout series, something from one of the Dune games and a neat remix based on GLaDOS from Portal.

The Device Has Been Modified )

Got some other weirdness on my playlist too: Blue Oyster Cult, The Turtles, Rasputina, Cake, Metisse, Oingo Boingo, etc.

In related news, I need a music icon.

Edit: Speaking of Fallout, I didn't realize that the trailer for Fallout 3 was released this summer. I'm of mixed feelings about this because YAY! MORE FALLOUT, but frankly, I SUCK at FPS and I'm really annoyed that virtually every game I might like is following that style. Anyhoo, here's the trailer:

Ron Perlman for the win! )

I admit it: I like bubblegum pop. It's hard to not like music that's so gloriously unfettered in its joy. Besides, it cheers me up. :-)

So I've been surfing YouTube a lot today. I caught the entire run of the The Maxx animated series as well as the first part of the first episode of Spy Groove... ah, I miss that show.

Anyhoo, I also stumbled across this ad for the hottest new product:

First, a couple of YouTube vids:

'Hey Ya' cover by Matt Weddle of Obadiah Parker )

'Drifting' by Andy McKee )

Next, some new (to me, anyway) Lemon Demon songs:4 song links )
Next, a treat for National Drunk Irishmen St. Patrick's Day: 7 song links )
Finally, some random songs: 5 song links )
Note that all YSI links are temporary and will likely expire after a week (around March 6).

Why yes, I do have odd musical tastes. Why do you ask?
