I have the nasty chronic cough every year in the autumn and winter, but it seems to have started earlier and been worse this year. Combined with some other respiratory stuff that's been going on, my doctor sent me to a ENT (Ear Nose Throat) specialist to get checked out. Just got back from that appointment and it turns out that I have a growth on my vocal cords. He says it's probably just a benign cyst, but there is the possibility that it's cancerous, especially considering that cancer runs in my dad's side of the family. So now I have to schedule a day off work to get out-patient surgery on my throat. I doubt that I'll be able to get it done before the end of the year (preferable because then I won't have to pay the deductible again), and even if I could, I don't know if I'd be able to take off work, what with everyone taking off for the holidays.

What a joyful body I have. :-(

Unemployment info

Here are some links discussing the current national unemployment situation. It's not a pretty picture.

Earworms

One of the medical sources we request records from is called Triumph and every. Single. Time. I see their name, "Still Alive" from Portal starts playing in my head.

The wordiness begins here:

So a friend of mine is quite the polyglot; he's fluent in English (obviously), is fluent or highly skilled in Spanish, Hebrew, German, Japanese, Russian and ASL and knows a smattering of Korean, Mandarin, Turkish, Basque and Georgian. He's rather obviously interested in languages of all kinds and he's currently available for translation or language research jobs. With his permission, Roger has allowed me to link any interested parties to his Facebook profile if you wish to contact him about a job.

Everything at fucking once!

Two days of testing starts today. Undoing the utilities' setups took a significant amount of time yesterday. Searching for new accomodation starts this afternoon. And the goddamn power flickered/went out last night, so my sleep machine stopped working in the middle of the night and my alarm clock reset. Thank goodness I'd set the alarm on my phone, too.

Oh frabjous fucking day.

Test Anxiety

Yeah... test anxiety doesn't end in college, bubbies. I woke up twice last night, each time thinking that my alarm clock hadn't gone off and I was late. I know I'll do okay (I have to maintain a 80% average over the course of the training period, not a perfect), but that doesn't stop the OMIGAWDPANIC!!!!

Edit: It doesn't really help when, during my typing this, the radio station does their Emergency Broadcast System screedly-beep thing. I REALLY don't want the Zombocalypse to start today, thankyewverramuch.

Weekend Update with Tina Fey... or whoever we could scrounge up in her place

It's been an interesting week and weekend.

As you know, I rolled my ankle last Monday and have been wearing a splint since Tuesday. I've gotten to the point where I can put weight on it and take off the splint for short periods, but pivoting it still hurts like a mofo, so I'm gonna be on the meds for another couple of days. I REALLY hope this is over and done with by Wednesday.

This weekend I went to the local farmers' market with some of my friends from work* and we had a good time, despite the looming weather. We had a nice breakfast at the little restaurant, though the waitress was a real jackass who screwed up 2 of our 5 orders and took forever to get us refills. Let's just say she earned the no tip she got.

The market itself was fun; there was a lot of produce and the weather/season is such that the vendors were just starting to start selling some plants. There was also a woman there who was selling some absolutely beautiful homemade cedar furniture. The prices were pretty good, though I don't have enough money available at the moment (damn saving up for the new job!). I got her card, though, and if any of y'all are interested, you can see the stuff here: Cedarwood Furniture by Franklin.

I had originally been planning on going to the North Carolina Ren Faire as well, but my ankle was starting to bother me towards the end of our tromp through the market & the docs at the clinic, as well as the physical therapist there, recommended that I try to walk on it for no more than 30 minutes at a time and then rest it, elevated, for at least 10-15 minutes. That, combined with the rain sweeping through the area, convinced me that it would probably be a Bad Idea to go yesterday. I feel bad, though, because I wanted to see my friend Alex all in his piratical gear. I'll just have to see him next weekend. ;-)

In sadder news, I went by my local (& favorite) comic shop after leaving the market and it's closed for business. I knew that it was going to close at the end of this month (the property management raised the owner's rent/"maintanence fees" by $1k/month without any warning), but I thought the last day was going to be either today or tomorrow. I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to the owner (a really nice guy). I do know that he was looking into possibly re-opening in down in the Garner area at some later date, which I fully support. Not only does Garner need something along those lines, but it would be cheaper rent, which is always nice.

Today I plan on downloading/printing all the forms I'm gonna need for my first day at work (tax stuff, health plan enrollment, etc.), writing my "this is why I'm REALLY leaving" letter for work (haven't decided if I'm going to hand it over or not, but it sure is cathartic), going to my gaming group for the first time in lord-knows-how-long and then picking up some furniture from the house of some friends. And yes, I'll be careful when moving the furniture :-P

*I've always maintained that I like the people I work(ed) with, but increasingly hated the people I worked for. My coworkers and I plan on keeping in touch as much as possible.

Unfluenza

One last thing before I head out for MY LAST DAY OF WORK!!! My coworkers and I have noticed that there's something strange going on lately; our patient counts have been going up, like they usually do during flu season, but we haven't actually had any flu cases come through. We have a ton of people coming in for upper respiratory infections and colds and injuries and STDs and such, but less than a dozen flu cases in the last 6 months. Kinda hope that keeps up; the flu is truly, truly nasty and the last thing I want is to catch it off a sick patient on MY LAST DAY OF WORK!!!

(Yes, I'm excited about going on vacation. Why do you ask?)

Snow Day... Yes!

So literally as soon as I walked into the clinic & clocked in, I got a call on my cell telling me that we're going to be closed for the entire day. I went ahead and stayed long enough to put up "we're closed until further notice" signs and make sure the thermostats were set on "don't let the pipes freeze", then came home. About 30 minutes on the clock and about an hour round-trip on the road.

::sigh::

At least I can watch the Inauguration now.

In other news, I strongly dislike driving in the snow, especially when the wind is strong enough to be blowing the snow at a 75 degree angle.
