Random voting stuff, as is expected on Election Day

The DJs on the radio morning show that I wake up to had an interesting idea:
The Election Night Drinking Game!
Everytime someone on TV says any of the following words or phrases, take a shot!
  • "contested ballots"
  • "swing state"
  • "provisional ballot"
  • lawsuit
  • "it's too early to tell"
  • "projected winner"
  • "Electoral College"
  • "exit poll"
And if anyone mentions any of the third-party candidates as being "spoilers" or otherwise "stealing votes", drink a double shot. So how long until you pass out?

At school today, we were waiting for the teacher to unlock the door before class, and the conversation turned, as it must, to the election. One kid (just turned 18) was being ribbed about not being registered to vote, but what got me was this one guy who flat out said that he "wasn't going to bother to vote because it would be a wasted vote."

!!!!!!!!!!

I am literally unable to comprehend this viewpoint. You may feel that it's a waste of your time or that it's unlikely to have any real effect, but to flat out state that you feel that your vote would be wasted just leaves me speechless. If nothing else, the word "waste" implies that you could use it elsewhere for something better. Where- and whenelse are you going to fucking vote?!?!

Something that really bothers me, and that [livejournal.com profile] disgruntledgrrl talked about earlier this month, is that about 1/3 of the positions up for election on my ballot were single-candidate choices. Something like 10 state positions (judges, state senators, etc.) were uncontested Republicans, and the other 2 were only being opposed by Libertarians or Independents. Where the hell are the Democrats? I may not like them, especially after those chicken-shit fiascos they pulled by fleeing the state (TWICE!!), but to not even bother to run?! What the hell are they thinking?!

Still, I did my civic duty and voted, and hopefully we'll have a President declared before the end of the week. *sigh* Anyone wanna take odds that we won't?
